Alta Vista Colorado June 2020
Just had to go here. My mom grew up in and around Alta Vista except it was in IA. Some 800+ miles away. So that connection along with the fact that it was the site of Colorado’s first basketball tournament also pushed me to visit. Several small schools were combined in the 1920’s and the school was built in Alta Vista to provide for those students. In the 1951 a gymnasium was added and that is when the first tournament was held. Unfortunately, the reason for Alta Vistas existence was the cause of its demise. More school consolidations and a diminishing population caused the town to be “consolidated out of existence” The school is now a private residence, and the Gym is still standing along with a few stray buildings from the past.
