Wolverine Colorado

Wolverine Camp Colorado September 2019

Thanks to Ken Jessen, he led me to this fascinating place. Yep, I was standing in the woods near the mine when I heard a faint and unusual sound. I walked towards the 4X4 road only to discover a young man on an electric bike with a rifle strapped to his back. He explained he was from a local ranch and used this road to get to his favorite moose hunting ground. As he rode away, I could not help but wonder how he would get a Moose out of the woods on that bike? It was also ironic and disturbing to see signs telling people not to destroy anything lying on the ground destroyed.

This was a mining camp near the Wolverine Mine.  The Wolverine Mine was a copper property which yielded 30 per cent copper. Back in the early 1900’s it was the principal mine near Pearl Colorado. The ore was hauled by wagons to Grand Encampment, Wyo., where it was reduced. Due to discovery of several other prospects yielding paying copper. It was expected that the Laramie & Hahn’s Peak Railway company will construct a branch line from Collins, Wyo., to North Park, following the North Platte River. It will pass within 15 miles of Pearl, reducing the hauling distance one half, as Pearl is 30 miles from Grand Encampment. A smelter was constructed in 1901 in Pearl, another Colorado ghost town near the wolverine mine.
