As you come from Animas Forks towards Silverton you see this opening on the valley floor. It is home of a once thriving community. The famous Sunnyside mine and the Sunnyside Mill were the major contributors to the economics of Eureka. As some of the other nearby towns started their demise the merchants moved to Eureka. This town was open and had a post office until 1942. In 1948 the Sunnyside Mill closed. Eureka was one of a few towns in this area, at this altitude, that stayed open through the winter.
