Oro City Colorado Townsite – Ghost town

Not much left in this area except foundations , holes in the ground, heaps of gravel and evidence that people lived here at one time. Almost impossible to visualize a camp of about 10,000 once worked the area. The average prospector was making about $19 a day at a time when gold was selling for $18 an ounce.
I have heard that the original Oro City became part of Leadville and Oro City moved 2 to 3 miles up California Gulch. Â These photos are of the Second Oro City.
I went here to test out a mine lab metal detector. I found out it works great at least to a depth of 3 feet. Â Yep I found a donkey shoe.
