Fort Bridger Wyoming

Fort Bridger WY September 2020

Established in 1843 by Jim Bridger and Louis Vasquez as an emigrant supply stop on the Oregon Trail. It proved to be one of the main hubs for westward expansion. Numerous trails and modern-day highways go through or near the fort. The mountain men used this supply point as well as travelers on the Oregon Trail, the Overland Stage, the Union Pacific, Pony express and eventually the Lincoln Highway and finally Interstate 80. I forgot to mention the Indians and usual assortment of scallywags.

The Mormons acquired the fort in 1850 and eventually the army took it over in 1858. Friendly hosts and hostesses at the fort with many buildings, interpretive signs, artifacts etc etc. Good example of a mid-1800’s Military fort. They claim there are 36 structures remaining. I did not count but I believe them.

By 1890 the fort was abandoned, and many buildings were hauled away as happened frequently in the old west. Pull up stakes and move to the next boom town. It took until 1933 for some locals to realize the value of preserving the site and rose to the challenge.
